Start with the Home Row keys — A S D F for the left hand and J K L ; for the right hand. Place your fingers on these keys without looking at the keyboard. Practice until your fingers naturally return to this position. Then move to the Upper Row (Q W E R T Y U I O P) and Lower Row (Z X C V B N M).
Touch typing means typing without looking at the keyboard, using all 10 fingers placed on specific keys. Hunt-and-peck means searching for each key visually. Touch typists can reach speeds of 60–100+ WPM while hunt-and-peck rarely exceeds 30 WPM. Our lessons teach proper touch typing technique.
With 30–45 minutes of daily practice, most beginners can reach 30–40 WPM within 3–4 weeks. Reaching 50–60 WPM typically takes 6–8 weeks. Consistent daily practice is more effective than occasional long sessions.
Left hand: little finger on A, ring finger on S, middle finger on D, index finger on F. Right hand: index finger on J, middle finger on K, ring finger on L, little finger on semicolon. Both thumbs rest on the Space bar. The F and J keys have raised bumps to help you find the home row without looking.
SSC (Staff Selection Commission) requires 35 WPM for English typing. Most state government jobs require 30–40 WPM. NIELIT CCC requires basic typing proficiency. Bank clerk exams require 20–30 WPM. Our typing test lets you measure your current speed and practice to meet these targets.
It is recommended to learn English typing first because it teaches you the fundamental keyboard layout and touch typing technique. Once you master English typing and reach 30+ WPM, switching to Hindi or Punjabi typing becomes much easier since the finger movements and keyboard habits are already established.
